It's been long I harnessed my brain, and so I decided to do that today by placing myself in the shoe of my Sugar and other pregnant women. I dedicate this piece to all Pregnant Women....
To the unborn.
I remember my first letter to you.
I stood in the desert wondering where to go. The sands had turned deaf to my plea for direction. The wind went her way like the Levite who couldn't help the man robbed by thieves.
I thought of you.
I thought of your innocence as you kicked the walls that kept you warm. You were full of life. You knew when the sun rose and when it set. You tickled me when I couldn't afford laughter. You were all I had.
In my quest for a greener pasture; a place where your dreams, I will nurture, I wrote a letter to you and though you couldn't see, you felt every word and gave me a kick as if to say "Mummy chop knuckle!"
My words were void of grammar for your mind was still in the state of tabula rasa. I wrote from my heart; my hopes, my dreams, my struggles, my fights and my zeal to keep you safe in a world where evil strives.
You promised to stay. I heard you. Your voice was in the rising of the sun; in its promise to return the next day. It was in every second you stretched those little hands and limbs. You promised to stay. You did.
I see the promise you made in your eyes. You are beautiful. You stayed in the desert with me. Held my hands and called me friend even before learning to say 'Mama'. You gave me the strength to cross the wilderness in the ninth month. You made me believe in the joy of motherhood in my dreams.o
So, this is my promise to you, my perfect little one. Though you're yet to come in reality, I will say these words to you as I carry you in my womb and write a letter I will always remember. Until then, paint a picture of where you are now, keep it safe in your eyes and show me when you arrive.
